What I Learned From Michael Jackson’s Engineer, Bruce Swedien

Among the greats, I had the privilege of doing some sessions with the legendary Bruce Swedien (the genius behind Michael Jackson’s records) . I noticed Bruce always kept the massive analog tape machine positioned right next to him at the console instead of relying on a remote control. Why? Because if you’ve ever worked with real tape, you know how fast a technical failure can turn into absolute disaster! In this video, I share: My time in the studio with Bruce Swedien & David Foster cooking up crazy synth sounds on an ARP 2600, for the movie LIPSTICK. The sheer terror of a tape machine failure - and the nightmare moment it happened to me while recording a guitar solo for Joe Williams. How I saved the master tape from being completely ruined using some creative engineering, ADAT offsets, and a lot of luck! If you've ever worked in the analog world, you know the exact feeling of panic I'm talking about. Have you ever had a studio disaster that you had to save at the last second? Let me know in the comments!
