At the beginning of the rainy season, hungry animals rush to pastures barely covered with young grass shoots. Grazing this short grass, the animals develop a black, foul-smelling diarrhea, and many experience tremors with drooling and tetanic spasms. Unfortunately, some animals die from this early-rainy-season disease. To avoid this harmful practice, animals should be prepared with a diet rich in minerals and vitamins, and they should not be put out to pasture before adequate vegetation cover is established. Grass tetany, or hypomagnesemia, is a neglected metabolic disease that kills sheep and goats and reduces the potential of cows and calves.
