Flying in Alaska doesn't get any better than mountain flying. Of course, there are parts of Alaska that don't have mountains. But when someone thinks of Alaska, even a pilot that wants to fly in Alaska, they think mountains. Mountain flying brings a lot of challenges for pilots. The air moving around the mountains can be treacherous with uncontrollable downdrafts, dangerous turbulence, and rapidly changing weather. Of course, with the proper training and aviation safety mindset, mountain flying is incredibly rewarding. The vistas are out of this world, the challenges palpable and the scale of ones place on the earth is enlightening. Mitch and I headed out for the last flight in my mountain flying and ski flying course at Alaska Floats and Skis. It was March, and very cold. About -10ºF that morning. It was a clear day, hardly a whisper of wind in the sky, and the stage was set. As Mitch and I approached the mountain peaks in the airplane, we headed for the floss gap. This gap is between Moose's Tooth and Broken Tooth, two prominent peaks. This is where we did a mountain pass crossing technique that I'd never learned. Not only that, it was at this moment that I got tears in my eyes. Absolutely and totally incredible. Just scale, majesty and beauty was just so emotionally overwhelming. Flying on skis, and doing mountain flying training, was just such a good time. Alaska Floats and Skis offered a fantastic stay and journey. Couldn't have asked for a more fun flying experience. I learned a lot of about flying, and I had a great time along the way. Want to be a pilot?
