Aircraft Accident/Incident Overview: The accident aircraft was a McDonnell Douglas MD-88 and was equipped with 2 Pratt & Whitney JT8D-219 engine(s). It first flew 1987. Under Delta Air Lines, the accident aircraft was registered as "N909DL". At the time of the accident the aircraft was 28 years old. Air Accident/Incident Overview: On the 5th of March, 2015, Delta Air Lines Flight 1086 was preparing to land at LaGuardia Airport in New York City, United States after flying from Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport in Atlanta, United States. On board were 127 passengers and 5 crew members. The airport at which the accident aircraft was scheduled to land was under falling snow and freezing fog conditions. After flying a relatively normal approach towards LaGuardia Airport, the accident aircraft touched down on runway 13 at 11:02 AM, but shortly after veered off the left side of the runway about 3,000 feet from the approach end of the runway, on a heading approximately 10 degrees left of the runway heading. The aircraft skidded left across the snowy airfield until about 4,100 feet from the approach end of the runway, when the aircraft ran up the berm and the left wing struck the airport perimeter fence. It then was forced back onto a heading parallel with runway 13, and continued sliding in this direction for another 900 feet along the perimeter fence, before coming to rest about 5,000 feet from the approach end of runway 13, with the nose of the aircraft hanging over the berm. The left wing of the aircraft destroyed approximately 940 feet of airport perimeter fence. The aircraft sustained significant structural damage 24 people on board the aircraft were injured during the accident. The flight crew were able to successfully evacuate off everyone on board the aircraft. Investigative Overview: The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) determined that the probable cause of the crash was the Captain’s inability to maintain directional control of the airplane due to his application of excessive reverse thrust, which degraded the effectiveness of the rudder in controlling the aircraft’s heading.
