He was tasked with forming a Polish army. The Sultan was sympathetic to the Polish cause, and the Poles wanted to fight, believing that the fall of Russia would result in the rebirth of an independent Polish nation. Adam Mickiewicz's mission was very short-lived - the bard unexpectedly died in his quarters in Constantinople. Today, a museum of Adam Mickiewicz functions at the site.
