De gewonde piloot op Urk.. | Urk in Wintersferen | 2023

As early as 1939, Urk men, born between 1904 and 1920, were called up for military service. The first restrictions are also imposed on the Urk fleet. The first three Germans reached Urk on May 13. Two days later the village was permanently occupied. Hotel Woudenberg houses 20 Germans. A second division soon followed. There were two German ships in the harbor. The Wasserpolizei occasionally came for raids. The Urk Air Guard searched the skies for illegal aircraft. Reports were sent to Zwolle, where the anti-aircraft guns were located. The Germans lived in Urk, so they also sought contact with the population. Some helped the population peel potatoes, others handed out toys. Of course, this was quickly taken away from the children. The daily life Initially, not much changed for the Urk population during the occupation. The men continued to fish and the women took care of the housework. However, it did not take long before the situation in Urk also became palpable. Food was 'rationed' and many usual products were replaced by a surrogate; for example coffee, soap and tobacco. Solutions were sought for scarce products. For example, when there was a shortage of firewood, the pole screen was broken down to burn the stove and heat the homes. The Urk population also had to deal with various restrictions; listening to Radio Oranje, flying the Dutch flag and imposing the curfew. The creativity of the Urk population made it possible to deal with the bans that were imposed; on washing day, clothes were hung outside in order of the Dutch flag, illegal newspapers were printed and English songs were secretly rehearsed at school in preparation for the possible liberation. Members of the Urk Resistance also participated in the Air Guard to keep downed pilots out of the hands of German prisoners of war.
