Your GRE Error Log Sucks | Steal Mine Instead
Most GRE students know they should keep an error log. The problem? A lot of GRE error logs are ineffective — and some might actually be hurting your score. I’m Erika Tyler-John, GRE expert and 339 scorer with Target Test Prep, and in this video I show you exactly how I error log using a real GRE example problem — and why my approach goes way beyond logging missed questions, difficulty levels, and timing stats. After nearly a decade teaching this test, I’ve seen countless popular GRE error log templates that focus on organization… but miss the most valuable part of the process: analysis. In this video, we break down the three questions that turn an error log from a spreadsheet into a score-improvement tool: What? — What mistake did you actually make? Why? — Why did you make that mistake? How? — How do you recognize and prevent the same mistake in the future? Using a real Quant example, I demonstrate how a mistake that initially looks like an “exponents issue” turns out to be something much more specific — a process flaw involving GCF factoring, pattern recognition, and execution strategy. We also cover: Why shallow error analysis doesn’t change performance How to distinguish conceptual gaps from process errors How to identify repeatable mistake patterns How to create actionable notes you’ll actually use later Why spending more time reviewing can help you improve faster If your error log is currently just a list of missed problems, this video will show you how to transform it into one of the most powerful tools in your GRE prep.
