How can research be launched at the very beginning of an epidemic? How can we address the emergency while collecting data ethically and in a coordinated manner for subsequent publication? Michael Casera is an intervention epidemiologist who has led 15 missions with Doctors Without Borders (MSF) on cholera, measles, diphtheria, and dengue epidemics. Drawing on this experience, he will detail the following in this webinar: the rapid implementation and coordination of epidemiological surveillance systems the relationships between stakeholders during an epidemic: non-governmental organizations (WHO, MSF), governments, and researchers the challenges encountered, which vary depending on the pathogens and their mode of transmission organizational tips for collecting data and conducting successful research Michael Casera holds a Master of Science degree and a Master of Public Health degree. He worked as an intervention epidemiologist with Doctors Without Borders on the rapid implementation of epidemiological surveillance systems in acute epidemic situations, particularly for cholera, measles, diphtheria, and dengue. He played a key role in epidemic response operations in crisis-affected regions, notably in Haiti, Sudan, and Gaza. He is currently the coordinator of the epidemic investigation task force at the Pasteur Institute, where he bridges the gap between operational epidemiology and applied research.
