Kōrin-in Temple, located within the grounds of Daitoku-ji Temple in Kyoto, is a Zen temple complex founded during the Sengoku period. It did not exist because of its former glory, but rather as a place left behind after the family's fate ended. The founder of Kōrin-in was the Sengoku daimyo Hatakeyama Yoshisō. As the war intensified, the Hatakeyama clan gradually declined. Kōrin-in did not become a continuation of power, but rather served as a Buddhist temple to house the deceased and to preserve the family's memories. After the Hatakeyama clan's decline, the Kaga Maeda family renovated the temple, allowing it to survive. This process was not a symbol of a change of power, but rather a way for a piece of history to be received and continued. Kōrin-in thus avoided narratives of victory and defeat, remaining in a lower position. The temple is not large in scale, with a compact layout and several gardens surrounding the buildings. From the mountain gate to the entrance hall, from the stone grove to the garden, the space gradually narrows, deliberately lowering the line of sight and volume, preventing the viewer from observing from afar and forcing them to approach closely. This film does not focus on the rise and fall of the Warring States period, nor does it offer judgments on individual fates. It simply returns to Xinglin-in as the origin of Bodhi-ji Temple, observing how a family was quietly settled after historical upheavals. Here, history is not summarized, but simply preserved.
