Ahmad ibn Hanbal said: 1- Among his virtues (may Allah be pleased with him) is that he stood up with Hamza and Ubaidah to confront their opponents on the Day of Badr. On the authority of Qais ibn Abbad, who said: I heard Abu Dharr swear an oath: “These two are adversaries who have disputed about their Lord” [Al-Hajj: 19], that it was revealed about those who came out on the Day of Badr: Hamza, Ali, Ubaidah ibn al-Harith, Utbah and Shaibah, the sons of Rabi’ah, and al-Walid ibn Utbah. 2- Among his virtues, may God be pleased with him, is that God Almighty granted his hand the conquest of Khaybar after he killed their knight, Marhab. On the authority of Salamah ibn al-Akwa' (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: "When we arrived at Khaybar, their king, Marhab, came out, swaying his sword and saying... Salmah said: "So I went out, and there were a group of the Prophet's companions saying: 'Amir's work is in vain; he killed himself!'" He said: "So I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while I was weeping and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, is Amir's work in vain?' The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Who said that?'... So I went to Ali and led him, and he was sore-eyed, until I brought him to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He spat in his eyes and he was cured, and he gave him the banner... 3- Among the virtues of Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) is that he was to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the position that Aaron was to Moses (peace be upon them both) in terms of succession... On the authority of Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out for Tabuk and appointed Ali as his successor... Al-Khattabi said: "This was only said by him (may Allah be pleased with him) when he set out for Tabuk, but he did not take him with him..." 'Ayadh said: (It contains virtues of Ali and his status that do not diminish the status of anyone else…) Abu al-Abbas al-Qurtubi said: (… The Prophet ﷺ only appointed him as his representative for a specific matter…) 4- Among the virtues of Ali, may God be pleased with him, is God’s love for him and his high status with His Messenger ﷺ. On the authority of Sahl ibn Sa’d, may God be pleased with him, that the Messenger of God ﷺ said on the day of Khaybar: “Tomorrow I will give this banner to a man at whose hands God will grant victory, who loves God and His Messenger, and whom God and His Messenger love…” On the authority of Abu Hazim… he said: He says Abu Turab! He laughed and said: By God, no one named him except the Prophet ﷺ… The Prophet ﷺ said: “Where is your cousin?” She said: “In the mosque.” So he began wiping the dust from his back, saying: “Sit down, Abu Turab…” Al-Ayni said: (It indicates the virtue of Ali… and his high status with the Prophet ﷺ…) On the authority of Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas, may God be pleased with him, who said: As for what you mentioned, three things… The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said these things to him, so I will not insult him... And I heard him say on the day of Khaybar: I will give the banner to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and whom Allah and His Messenger love... Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called for Ali, Fatimah, Hasan, and Husayn, and said: O Allah, these are my family. And on the authority of Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: ((By Him Who split the seed... the covenant of the unlettered Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to me is that none but a believer should love me, and none but a hypocrite should hate me.)) Ibn Hubayrah said... `Iyadh said: (...and if it were otherwise, I would hate him because of his hatred for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his followers...) 5- Among the virtues of Ali ibn Abi Talib is that he was one of the most famous scribes of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he was the one who wrote the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah.
