Its weight conveys the feeling of taking something seriously, and it is a very thoughtful gift. The origin of yokan is said to be a soup dish that originated in mainland China. As the kanji for “yokan” means “something hot made from mutton”, it is said that the dish originally referred to mutton stew. It was introduced to Japan by Chinese Zen monks during the Kamakura and Muromachi periods, but as Japanese Zen monks were not allowed to eat meat, they began to make yokan using azuki beans instead of mutton. This is said to be the origin of yokan in Japan. As I keenly felt at the National Confectionary Grand Prix last time, I can do nothing but take off my hat to the ideas, skills and beliefs of Japanese confectioners. The yokan I was able to introduce this time is just a small part of the yokan that can be found all over Japan. The thought that there are still more supreme yokan that I don't know about makes me want to continue my search. Above all, I think that we must not let this wonderful traditional technique die out. We should visit the restaurants we don't want to lose often, and I think that supporting your favorite idols when you can is the same for everything. The eternity is not promised to your favorite yokan. I will conclude this grand prix speech by praying that all the yokan lovers in Japan who watched this video will eat their favorite yokan this weekend.
