Karlsruhe: Die Turmbergbahn (Standseilbahn) – Mitfahrt im Mai 2022

Turmbergbahn at Karlsruhe-Durlach is the oldest funicular railway in Germany that it still in use. It was opened in 1988. The 2 cars running there at present were built in 1966. Currently only one of them is used for passenger transport. When you take a ride up on Turmbergbahn you have a great view across the city of Karlsruhe. The traffic company, Karlsruher Verkehrsbetriebe, plans a complete modernization and reconstruction of the line. In 2022 the line of the tracks is 315 meters. So you can see the passing loop well from the upper station. Karlsruher Verkehrsbetriebe plans to extend the line. The lower station shall be shifted close to the terminal loop of the tramway. In the street Bergbahnstraße a middle lane with plants has been kept free over all the decades, as this extension has been planned for a long time. So it will become easier to change between funicular, tram, and bus. When the line will be extended also new cars will be put on the rails. So far the seats in the cars are placed in a stair-like manner and the cars are boarded via stairs. The new cars will have all their seats arranged on one level. So they will be accessible, using normal horizontal platforms. The cars will be placed on an inclined chassis. In the new section of the line in Bergbahnstraße the tracks will be less steep than in the old section. The chassis will be able to change its inclination according to the tracks. A ruin of an old castle is on top of the mountain. The slopes of the mountain are used by the state vineyard Karlsruhe-Durlach.
