The idea was not to wallow in these feelings, nor to avoid them altogether, but to accept that this is what living feels like to me, and to know that’s quite alright. Many of us spend our entire lives aching to fit in; to bespeak the status quo, but the fact is that our neurotypical world is bursting with neurodivergent people who are often forced to silently and invisibly tolerate a parallel existence. As we meander through a world not designed for people like us, we are constantly reminded of the supposed virtue of fighting our daily battles as quietly as possible, so as not to disturb the existing conditions of our communities. The problem here is that neglecting to speak up about our feelings like loneliness, anxiety, depression, or neurological variations (among so many others) only compounds them over time, often leaving us buried beneath an avalanche of chemical imbalances and social misunderstandings. In order to create a more harmonious society, we require nothing less than benevolent acceptance of others and their sensitivities. The more we talk about loneliness, the less lonely we will be. Today, this song and its accompanying music video serves as a gentle anthem for those of us who navigate sadness and disquiet, anxiety and nervousness. The flashes of abstract visuals are meant to be a reminder that our diverse mental states create palettes of color and beauty that deserve to be observed with compassion, rather than judgment, and that the constant juxtaposition between isolation and community is a pillar of our collective human experience.
