Of course I was rooting for the Japanese team, but I also chose a team to root for. That's typical of middle school students. I chose Italy, and my friend chose Germany. I had decided to root for Italy before the tournament. The reason was that there were a lot of star players that even I knew at the time, and they were all good-looking. Both Germany, the host country, which was not highly rated, and Italy, which was in a turbulent mood after a major scandal, advanced smoothly and faced them in the semi-finals. Italy showed off their ironclad defense, which they are good at, but Germany fought tenaciously and the game went into extra time. With just a few minutes left in the game, a penalty shootout was on the horizon. After a loose ball from a corner kick, Pirlo made a no-look through pass to Grosso, who was still awake, and scored. I remember Grosso running around like he was crazy, and Buffon coming in as fast as he could to join the celebrations. As the excitement was still high, Germany launched a final onslaught, but captain Cannavaro stole the ball from them, passed it to Totti, then to Gilardino, who then scored a beautiful curling shot for Del Piero to finish off the game. Despite entering the tournament in a gloomy mood, the Italian team exploded with joy at having made it to the finals, while the German team, carrying the hopes of the country on their shoulders, were disappointed as they were defeated in front of their people. I remember being moved by how beautiful the flow of events was, from Grosso and Del Piero's goals to the end of the game. I remember thinking how amazing soccer is, when I think that people all over the world can be moved like this. Since then, I've been watching Del Piero's playlists on YouTube and I've been falling in love with him ever since. I never thought I'd meet him at such a distance 13 years after that match.
