With their deeds, they added glory to Turkish history and the Turkish Nation... Here is the story of these heroes; The story of Kürşad and his çeris is told almost identically in both ancient Chinese and Turkish sources. Only in Chinese sources is Kürşad's name referred to as chie-shih-shuai. Some sources mention the 40 çeris along with Kürşad, while others mention Kürşat and his 40 çeris, meaning 41 people. Kürşad was a Göktürk prince who lived in the seventh century. His real name was Şu Tigin. The nickname Kürşad, formed by combining the words Kür and şad, was given to him by his uncle, the last khan, Kara Khagan. His father was the 10th Great Turkic Khan, Chuluk Khagan. By 621, the Göktürks had grown stronger and richer as a result of wars and the unification of Turkic tribes, experiencing one of the most glorious periods in their history. However, the poisoning of Chuluk Khagan in 621, following a Chinese conspiracy, plunged the great Göktürk Khanate into a serious crisis. After Chuluk Khagan's death, his brother, Kara Khagan, became ruler. His marriage to his deceased brother's Chinese wife, albeit in accordance with ancient Turkic traditions, sparked unrest among the Turks. It is alleged that Chuluk Khagan's wife, a Chinese princess, I-çing Khatun, was behind this poisoning. Kara Khagan's marriage to I-çing Khatun also ensured the continuation of the Chinese conspiracies. As a result of I-çing Khatun's intrigues and the Qara Khagan's reckless policies, some Turkic tribes rebelled against the Göktürks. The drought and cold that followed negatively impacted the lives of the people, while increasing Chinese pressure made things even more difficult. Seizing this opportunity, the Chinese sent a large army north into the Turkic lands. In the battle of 629, Qara Khagan was defeated and captured by the Chinese, along with 100,000 Turks. Thus, the Eastern Göktürk State collapsed and fell under Chinese rule. Along with Qara Khagan, thousands of Göktürks were taken to Siganfu, the Chinese capital, and forced to live in the territory assigned to them. During this period, Tai-Tsung, the second emperor of the Tang dynasty, the 18th imperial dynasty in China, reigned. China, with its population of 50 million, was the largest country in the world, and hundreds of thousands of Turks living under the yoke in Northern China were under constant threat of annihilation. However, even though the revolution failed, the Turks under Chinese rule never gave up. A wind of freedom, unstoppable by any force, began to blow across all Turkish provinces. The story of Kürşad and his 40 cheris spread by word of mouth, became the subject of legends, and had a stimulating effect on national consciousness among the captive Eastern Göktürk people. Finally, after 43 years, in 682, under the leadership of İlteriş Kagan and Bilge Tonyukuk, the wolf-headed banner was raised again, and the Second Göktürk State was established.
