The finest traditional Riojas are built for patience, slowly evolving over decades into wines of extraordinary complexity, grace, and freshness. Unlike many historic Rioja houses that still purchase significant amounts of fruit, every grape here comes from the family's own estate, Cuesta La Reina, where 75-year-old vines rooted in limestone-rich soils produce fruit of exceptional concentration and character. The blend is classic Rioja: predominantly Tempranillo, supported by Graciano and Mazuelo, and aged in older American oak barrels that contribute refinement without masking the fruit. The wine is traditionally racked several times during élevage, allowing it to clarify naturally with minimal intervention before bottling. It's an old-school approach that's becoming increasingly rare. Then there's the vintage. 2004 is widely regarded as one of Rioja's greatest harvests of the modern era, producing wines with remarkable balance, freshness, and longevity. More than twenty years later, this bottle is proving exactly why. The aromas are unmistakably classic Rioja: deep cherry, dried red fruit, cassis, cedar, leather, spice, and subtle earthy notes that continue to evolve with every minute in the glass. The tannins have softened beautifully, yet the wine remains vibrant, focused, and astonishingly youthful. In fact, if you served this blind, many people would guess it was less than half its age.
