We begin in Whittier, Alaska, a town hidden behind a mountain, connected to the world by a single tunnel that closes every night. There, some two hundred people live almost entirely in the same building, the Begich Towers, a structure that serves as a shelter, school, post office, church, store, and community center. In Whittier, proximity isn't comfort: it's survival. Next, we traveled to Ganvié, in Benin, an African city built on Lake Nokoué. There are no streets as we know them. The water is the road, the market, the entrance, and the exit. Canoes replace cars, houses are built on stilts, and entire generations have learned to read the lake as if it were a living map. Ganvié wasn't born as a tourist destination, but as a human response to danger, a city created on the water to escape threats on land. Afterward, we arrived in Shishmaref, an Inupiaq village in the Arctic, located on a barrier island in the Chukchi Sea. For thousands of years, its inhabitants learned to read the ice, the wind, the hunting trails, and the signs of the weather. But now the permafrost is melting, sea ice is forming later, storms are hitting harder, and the coastline is receding. Shishmaref grapples with one of the most difficult questions of our time: what happens when staying is dangerous, but leaving means losing the place that taught you who you are? This video isn't just a list of strange villages or impossible places to live. It's a journey through extreme territories where geography dictates how houses are built, how people move, how a community protects itself, and what knowledge can vanish when a place changes forever.
