筒子楼是北京极具时代特色的职工宿舍建筑，兴起于上世纪五六十年代，盛行于七八十年代。其典型结构为一条长走廊串联两侧若干单间，因形似“筒子”而得名，也被称为“集体宿舍楼”。 每层设有公共水房和卫生间，厨房多设在走廊内，一到饭点，整层楼弥漫着各家各户的烟火气。这种设计源于计划经济时期“先生产、后生活”的理念，旨在高效解决大量职工的居住需求。 如今，在北京二环内仍可见到部分筒子楼。它们被现代化的摩天大楼包围，内部设施老化——剥落的墙皮、昏暗的走廊、共用的水表电表，构成了强烈的视觉反差。居住者多为老职工、租户或外来务工人员，人员混杂，空间拥挤，使其具备了类似“城中村”的生态。 筒子楼不仅是物理空间，更承载着特殊的邻里文化——孩子们在走廊追逐，邻里间端着饭碗串门，这种“远亲不如近邻”的温情，成为许多北京人难以磨灭的城市记忆。随着城市更新加速，筒子楼正逐渐消失在视野中，成为一个时代的缩影。 Beijing Corridor Dormitories: Collective Memory of a Generation The Tongzi Lou (corridor dormitory) is a distinctive staff housing type in Beijing, emerging in the 1950s–60s and peaking in the 1970s–80s. Its defining feature is a long central corridor flanked by single rooms on both sides—hence the name "tube-shaped building." It is also known as "collective dormitory housing." Each floor shares a public washroom and toilet, while kitchens are often set up directly in the corridor. During mealtimes, the entire floor fills with the aromas of dozens of families cooking simultaneously. This design stemmed from the planned-economy ethos of "production first, living second," aiming to efficiently accommodate large numbers of state-employed workers. Today, some of these buildings still stand inside Beijing‘s 2nd Ring Road. Surrounded by gleaming skyscrapers, they show clear signs of decay—peeling paint, dimly lit hallways, shared utility meters—creating a striking urban contrast. Residents include retired employees, low-income renters, and migrant workers, resulting in crowded and diverse communities that often resemble “urban villages” in their social fabric. Beyond architecture, the Tongzi Lou fostered a unique neighborhood culture—children chasing each other down corridors, neighbors dropping in with bowls of food. This warmth of “close neighbors” remains an indelible memory for many long-time Beijingers. As urban renewal accelerates, these buildings are gradually disappearing, becoming a fading symbol of an entire era.
