How does PrePass work? | Trucking 101 | Trucking Answers

You see that PrePass transponder on your windshield but how does the whole system work? In this video I explain how the PrePass system of bypassing open scales works. It is partly magic waves and partly science. OK, it is mostly science. Still, there are a few parts to the system and we take a look at them on the Whiteboard. The overhead unit is called the Advanced Vehicle Identification Reader and it sends a signal to the transponder on your windshield. The transponder responds with your company's information and this is checked against a database of over 90 things from State and Federal and the SAFER Web site. It is important that you check the SAFER Web of a company before you go to work there. If they have numbers that are way over the national average expect to find yourself in a scale way more often than a better company. Once you get past the off ramp of the scale there is another overhead that reads your transponder. This is not at all PrePass sites yet but it will be. Anyway, it checks to see if you bypassed even though you got a red light. This will increase the amount of trucks from your company that will be pulled in later.
