Karin Kortje Performs “I Will Survive”
Karin Kortje grew up in a town called Grabouw, near Cape Town. She was packing apples at the orchards and earned R300 a month before she was discovered on IDOLS. The money she earned made it possible for her to buy some food and pay a little rent to her family. In 2005 Karin Kortje became the winner of the South African version of Idols hosted by M-Net a local television station. This is a huge win for aspiring artists and to date Karin Kortje has received the highest percentage of votes ever!! It was a rag to riches tale that had everyone excited in the country as it offered Karin an immense platform to launch her professional career. This win was very significant as Karin became the first black individual to win this competition. The first six month of her win Karin’s dream was almost shattered when she made wrong decisions regarding partners. This led to her fall and almost ruined her career. Karin being the resilient type and God-fearing woman she is refocused and rebranded. The last four years has seen her steadily clawing back making her presence felt in the industry. Like they say, we rise, we fall and in Karin’s case she rose again. We all find ourselves in situations that could destroy us, but in Karin’s case she moved beyond her circumstances and continue to prove her relevance in the music industry. Today, almost fifteen years later Karin manages her own brand and had taken full control of her career. She uses her experience to encourage and support the youth who have plans to carve a singing career. Karin’s professional rise, fall and rise again speak of courage, perseverance and love. Through her Foundation she hopes to share and inspire some of the most marginalised young people in South Africa. “My heart fills up with pride when I see all the talent that exists in South Africa. We have had so many children from the Overberg region enter the competition Overberg’s Got Talent, with no formal musical training or vocal lessons, and when they audition, they exude so much talent – which reminds me as to why it's necessary to give back to my community Facebook | @expressoshow.sabc3 | / expressoshow.sabc3 Twitter | @expressoshow | / expressoshow Instagram | @expressoshow | / expressoshow Pinterest | @expressomorning | / expressomorning Snapchat | @expressoshow | https://www.snapchat.com Website | http://www.expressoshow.com
