1979 Renault RS10 F1 TURBO Era, Renè Arnoux & Victor Jabouille, GP de France Historic & Goodwood FOS
In this video, I'm pleased to show you a legendary Formula 1 car: the 1979 Renault RS10, which marked the beginning of the turbo era by winning its first Grand Prix. In the first part of the video, you can see chassis RS10/02 (RE 22), which took Jean-Pierre Jabouille to a historic victory at the 1979 French Grand Prix in Dijon and was driven by his son Victor at the 2025 Grand Prix de France Historic at the Paul Ricard circuit. The second car, number 16, was filmed at the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed, and at the wheel was René Arnoux, the official Renault driver at the time and Jean-Pierre Jabouille's teammate. Although it bears the number 16, it should still be chassis number RS10/02. In 2019, for the 40th anniversary of Jabouille's victory, Renault chose Arnoux to drive. To pay homage to the driver, the team temporarily replaced chassis number 15 on the RE 22 with number 16. This car thus achieved the first victory with a turbocharged engine in Formula 1 history, ending the dominance of naturally aspirated engines (such as the Ford Cosworth DFV). The RS10 was the first Renault to fully exploit the Venturi ducts in the sidepods (inspired by the Lotus 79), glueing the car to the ground at high speeds. The Renault-Gordini EF1 engine has a displacement of 1,492 cc and is a 90° V6 (V6), with 4 valves per cylinder, double overhead camshafts, and two KKK turbochargers (one per bank), capable of developing 530 hp at 11,000 rpm. It is powered by a Hewland FGA 400 6-speed manual gearbox (specifically developed to handle the turbo's torque). I have to thank my friends and YouTubers @19Bozzy92 & @sportcrash71 with whom I collaborated to realise the footage video. Enjoy!
