2017 Chevrolet Suburban LT POV Cold Start, Driving Through Winter Storm Blair in 2WD (5.3-Liter V-8)

2017 Chevrolet Suburban POV cold start and driving through Winter Storm Blair that hit the midwest on January 5, 2025. This is my families personal Suburban. It features a 5.3-liter V-8 good for 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. Almost all of my drive was completed in two-wheel drive. However, I did switch to automatic four-wheel drive when I came upon a snow plow on a rural road and wanted to get out of its way by backing into a driveway quicker. A new set of Michelin Defender all-season tires was put on our Suburban last year. They handled the snow with ease and I had no problem getting around town using only two-wheel drive. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, "each year, 24 percent of weather-related vehicle crashes occur on snowy, slushy or icy pavement and 15 percent happen during snowfall or sleet. Over 1,300 people are killed and more than 116,800 people are injured in vehicle crashes on snowy, slushy or icy pavement annually. Every year, nearly 900 people are killed and nearly 76,000 people are injured in vehicle crashes during snowfall or sleet." For driver's that are unfamiliar with driving in the snow, either by being new drivers or inexperienced driving in snow, while it appears to be fun and easy, it takes a great amount of focus to handle, safely. Go slower than posted speed limits, ease onto the gas and brake pedals, keep both hands on the wheel, turn your lights on and use the hazards in low visiblity situations; if the back end is kicking out -- turn the steering wheel into the direction you're sliding and let off the gas. Do not slam on the brakes. Let off the gas well ahead of stop signs and stop lights and ease on the brakes as you approach. Drive with confidence, and don't panic.
