The Roof of Portugal? | Ride Across Portugal, Stage 2: Guarda to Covilhã

Everyone calls it the hard day. Almost everyone calls it their favourite. Stage 2 of Ride Across Portugal, North to South, leaves Guarda and climbs into the Serra da Estrela, through the village of Manteigas and up to the Torre, the highest point in mainland Portugal. The film follows the road past green mountain walls and a dam far below, up to where the cloud sits near the summit. Then the long drop off the Torre and a final kick up into Covilhã to finish. The thing the camera keeps catching is not effort for its own sake. It is riders smiling on the climb, and a rest stop where the whole group recovers together. You climb at your own rhythm, and the Serra stays calm and uncrowded all the way up, never a scrum for the road. Chase a timed segment if that is your goal, or let the mountain set the pace.
