Vocal Anatomy, Resonance, and Sense of Self
How does the larynx produce sound? How is that sound shaped by the rest of the vocal column? And how does the perception of another person's resonance function in relationship? Here's a clip from last year's class, 'Neurofascial Approach to the Diaphragm, Breath, and Vocal Column, where we take a therapeutic lens on breath and voice. Many animals have evolved a narrowed closure in their airway for sound production. But the more social the animal, the more sophisticated its ability to shape that sound, and to communicate information about its perceptual and autonomic state to others of its kind. Resonance in human evolution is particularly crucial -- what can you tell from hearing just a voice in the darkness?
