Rescuing Putita the Orca (with Dr Visser interview)
On the 25th of May 2010, Dr Ingrid Visser received a phone call from a member of the public that an adult male orca had stranded at Ruakaka. She immediately responded and together with Steve Hathaway, they managed to capture remarkable footage of the rescue. The orca, known as Putita was chasing rays when he became stuck on the shallow sandy beach. His presumed mother, Yin and presumed brother Rua waited just offshore and after his rescue all three have been resighted repeatedly, still together and doing well.
