The idea that "beginners should start with elk hair caddis" is outdated. Expensive hackle and hard-to-find elk hair make it far too difficult for beginners to assemble a full set of gear right off the bat. The X-Caddis requires only two materials. There’s no need for expensive hackle; instead, you can use the exuviae as a substitute, which you’ll have on hand along with the wings. It has excellent projectile trajectory and is easier to land on the target than the EHC. If you're concerned about drag, try attaching the shuck so it points downward to ensure it stays below the water's surface, or use a curved hook.
