Automotive Ethernet Switches - An essential link in, in-vehicle network security

PRESENTATION: With the evolving Ethernet technologies for the automotive industry, including multi-gig ethernet, the use of ethernet switches is almost inevitable. Even though "consumer electronics industry" offers decades of experiences in this segment, the needs of the automotive industry poses certain challenges. As a result, a special class of “automotive ethernet switches", comes into being. On the other hand, automotive industry is also going through its transformation to be able to cope up, and be prepared for several of new requirements. One of the primary push being, the E/E architecture evolution as well. And more specifically, for the higher order of organisations in the IVN, through concept of Zonal Controllers and Vehicle Computers, the multiplicity of “automotive ethernet switches" in IVN will rise. In a subtle way, these switches shall also absorb the networking complexity of the erstwhile complex in-vehicle physical interlinks (limited by the ethernet interlinks, for current case). The problem of physical wiring harnesses and interlinks mesh, is now transformed into a logical links localised by such switches. Further, in Vehicle Computer and Zonal Computers organisation, the high bandwidth ethernet links play a significant role to harness the High Performance Computers (HPCs) capacities. So, these fundamentally layer 2 devices, itself can become an attack vector in the new setting. And therefore are critical for the security fundamentals of any vehicular system. Adding “autonomous” or “connected” just adds to the criticality quotient for these switches in the vehicular system. In the conference setting, we shall try to understand the security perspectives for an IVN, from the "automotive ethernet switches". This would mean - from the essential background necessary to understand the topic, to the security possibilities with "ethernet switches": What kind of vulnerability exists/adds, with Ethernet Switches? What are some expectations? What are industry offerings and its maturity? And conclusion, with a summary of suggestions, to attain security through Ethernet Switches, a layer 2 opportunity in In-vehicle network, to minimise attack vectors.
