Calculating the centroid is necessary for several applications in mechanics. The centroid is of interest, for example, in punching operations. Here, the force applied by the tool should be directed at the centroid of the workpiece contour to generate evenly distributed shear forces. Knowing the centers of gravity of simple lines is important: • for determining the center of gravity of a truss (a structure composed of bars) • when using punching tools • when calculating the surface area of ​​solids of revolution using Guldin's rule Depending on the position of the reference edge, it is possible for partial center of gravity distances and/or the total center of gravity distance to have a negative sign. 👉 In mechanical engineering or mechatronics studies, i.e., in a classic engineering degree program, machine elements play a major role, just as they do in technical schools or engineering apprenticeships. In your studies, you'll often encounter it in various lectures called Machine Elements, Machine Elements 1, Machine Elements 2, Machine Design Theory, or as a subfield of Engineering Mechanics 1, Engineering Mechanics 2, or Engineering Mechanics 3.
