Every year I make the pilgrimage to Tahiti chasing one thing: a truly giant swell at Teahupo'o. A few weeks before this trip, Teahupo'o delivered two days of flawless perfection. The waves were pristine, mechanical, and everything surfers dream about. But I didn't go. I was waiting for something bigger. Then the charts lit up. A powerful South Pacific storm began generating one of the largest swells I had seen in years. It was the kind of forecast that makes every big wave surfer, photographer, and filmmaker stop what they're doing and pay attention. With El Niño beginning to flex its muscles, I spoke with Craig Brokensha, head forecaster at Swellnet. He believed the season had the potential to produce something truly historic, and this swell looked like it could be one of those moments. I also reached out to Kevin Wallis from Surfline. His assessment was equally compelling. He believed the swell could arrive even larger than the charts were suggesting. But there was a catch. The same storm generating this enormous swell also threatened to bring strong onshore winds, torrential rain, and poor conditions. The ingredients were there for one of the biggest days in years — or a complete write-off. Yet hidden within the forecast was a narrow window where everything might align. A chance that Teahupo'o could awaken at a size rarely seen, creating one of those legendary days surfers talk about for decades. For me, there was only one choice. I had to go because if I stayed home and later watched giant Teahupo'o detonating across social media, I would never forgive myself. This film follows that journey — from anticipation and uncertainty through to what actually unfolded when one of the most talked-about forecasts of the year finally arrived. Along the way, I documented some of Tahiti's most respected big wave chargers, including Matahi Drollet, Lorenzo Avvenenti, Tereva David and talented up-and-comer Ned Hart, as they prepared for what could have been a truly historic swell. But another story was unfolding. As surfers, photographers and support crews waited for their opportunity, the presence of the Gendarmerie became a major talking point. Even if the ocean delivered everything the forecasts promised, there were growing questions about whether anyone would actually be allowed to get out there and make the most of it. Would Teahupo'o finally reveal the giant waves everyone had hoped to witness? Or would weather, circumstance and factors beyond anyone's control have the final say? To put this mission into perspective, I've also included footage from the legendary 2011 CODE RED swell — one of the most iconic and unforgettable days ever witnessed at Teahupo'o. Sometimes the chase ends in glory. Sometimes it becomes a story you never expected to tell. This is that story. Enjoy.
