2002-09-26 Live at the Cité de la Musique, Paris, France. 8.00 Early Show. I used my knowledge on video editing to share these bootleg recordings on YouTube in the highest possible quality. I used manual video upscaling (no AI was used!) for this, to document Kraftwerk's live performances which has been my hobby for many years. I claim no ownership of this video, all the rights belong with Kraftwerk. Audience video of a Kraftwerk concert from 2002. This video in particular was a tough nut to crack. But I'd say the end result was worth the effort. The arrangements are good, and I like how bass heavy these shows are. Ralf hinted at a different concept for their next tour in a 1998 interview, the results of which we can see here. Kraftwerk ditched hardware synths in exchange for a minimalist stage setup using Cubase SX and softsynths. The music became less interactive. There was a certain looseness and irregularity to the rhythms in earlier concerts that is now gone. Musically I feel the old approach was preferable but it's not all bad. Sound quality is high and the minimalist setup made it easier for Kraftwerk to tour and perform around the world thus giving more people a chance to actually see them. In '02 and '03 there was still a decent amount of variation between performances. From my understanding Ralf plays keyboard harmonies and does vocals. Henning plays bass on some songs and otherwise adjusts sequenced basslines. Fritz does the same with drums and effects. And Florian controls the robovox vocals and background videos. The Robots is performed live by the band in 2002 without dummies. This concert in particular has a nice three minute intro of noises before it goes into the song proper. Expo 2000 is surprisingly bass heavy, it got toned down considerably by December 2002 for the Japan shows and remained that way ever since. The Man-Machine uses a different, stronger vocoder voice. Autobahn is slower than before but I kinda like it. Neon Lights returns for the first time since 1981. It's a pleasant surprise, a much needed lighter song between the bass heavy techno tracks. Pocket Calculator uses both English and French vocals. It's bouncy, I like the arrangement used here. Airwaves and Tango are still part of the setlist although Airwaves has been shortened to just one minute. Tribal is gone for good. Radioactivity is slower and less dance oriented than before, it gives me chills, I think it's a fantastic version. By large the arrangements resemble those from 1998 but they've been streamlined for the new setup. Thanks go to my friend Babass for his help and technical expertise.
