At around three or four months following their procedure, some patients develop bumps which look like pimples in recipient area. According to Dr. U, this is actually a positive sign that new hairs are growing. As they try to make their way to the surface, they encounter resistance from the skin. The emerging hair shafts cause a slight form of irritation to the overlying tissue. This results in inflammation which creates the bumps. The inflammation may affect the follicular group. Or if the shaft is not able to pass through the skin barrier, it may grow back downward into the tissue as an ingrown hair. Patients should be aware that new signs of growth usually appear at about three to four months on average. So the formation of bumps around this time can actually be viewed as a logical correlation. One or two pimples should not be cause for concern. In most cases, they will resolve without much in terms of intervention. However, if the bumps are more widespread and noticeable, Dr. U advises patients to contact their hair transplant doctor to determine an appropriate course of treatment. This may include the use of medications or even surgery, depending on the nature and severity of the case.
