Koryo Town is located in the northwestern part of Nara Prefecture, and the Miyoshi and Hikisō settlements are situated in the central and southwestern parts of the town. During the Edo period, this region was largely governed by the Koriyama Domain, but it was also shared with other territories such as Tōmine, Hōryūji, Daikōin, Akishino-dera, Daichiin, and Uchiyama Eikyūji. Miyoshi was formed in 1876 through the merger of Akabe Village, Ōgaito Village, and Saionji Village. According to the "Collection of Town and Village Histories," around 1882, it had 202 households and 1143 inhabitants. This region was also an agricultural settlement primarily focused on rice cultivation, but due to a serious water shortage caused by reliance on reservoirs, cotton cultivation was practiced early on. The Ōgaito district of Miyoshi had a central character in this region, and it is believed that a town center was formed there, with many merchant houses. Walking through the settlement today, the area where the north-south and east-west roads intersect reveals remnants of a former town, with scattered merchant-style houses. The sight of houses with tiled roofs and those retaining their chimneys evokes the bustling days of the town.
