Master System Longplay [011] - Sonic The Hedgehog 2 - PAL

Sonic the Hedgehog 2, on the Master System, and unlike the previous game which was a quasi-port of the Megadrive version, this is it's own game. Featuring a completely different set of Zones and a bunch of level gimmicks not in the present in the Megadrive version makes for a very different, and uneven, experience. Developed by a different team and clearly rushed to meet the deadline, it's competent and somewhat ambitious in trying to get the feel of it's 16-bit brethren, but inconsistent level progression, difficulty spikes, some half-baked gimmicks, lack of checkpoints, finicky physics and a few other things stop this from reaching the heights of either it's 16-bit counterpart or it's 8-bit predecessor. They obviously had bigger plans that were constrained by time and what we end up with is a good not great sequel. And while it doesn't have Yuzo Koshiro, the SoR/Shinobi music composer, we do get the basis for "Toot Toot Sonic Warrior" in Green Hills Zone. (I'm pretty sure the only speed up monitor in the game doesn't actually work). Recorded on an actual PAL Master System 1 with composite, so it's just like you remember it...if you lived in the PAL territories...otherwise you probably had it on a Game Gear. Back of the (PAL) box: "Ride a runaway railcart, fly a hang glider through a raging storm, and shoot through a mind-boggling maze of twisting pipes as you and Sonic The Hedgehog race to save Tails and his friends from the evil Dr. Robotnik! It's the hottest 8-bit action ever!"
