In May 1978, the stolen and abandoned car of a gendarme's wife was found in the Chantilly forest along with a plan for robbing the Pierrefonds post office. Clues, later revealed to have been deliberately left by the criminal, led law enforcement to the trail of organized crime. This discovery was quickly linked to the assault of a 17-year-old girl in Pont-Sainte-Maxence, and then to a car bomb incident that injured a gendarme in Creil. Alain Lamare went so far as murder, killing a 19-year-old girl he had picked up hitchhiking in Chantilly on December 1, 1978. The killer taunted the gendarmes by sending them handwritten letters claiming responsibility for the crimes. Worse, his actions seem to show an escalation in severity: two more attacks on women (one seriously injured and one paralyzed) and the robbery of the Senarpont post office. In total, he will be definitively linked to one murder and five attempted murders. The man leaves clues and fingerprints. Composite sketches are created, but he manages to evade the police.
