What starts as forbidden communication turns into something neither of them expected. When thousands of Hollowmen swarm the pit, they fight side by side to survive. Levi risks everything, crossing a rope bridge to reach Drasa on Valentine's Day — the same day her dying father chose to end his life. Love turns to disaster when the rope snaps and Levi plunges into the pit. Drasa doesn't hesitate — she jumps in after him with a parachute. What they find below shatters everything: in 1940, over 10,000 US soldiers vanished into this pit, turned into Hollowmen by leaked chemical weapons. And Lady Barto's company has been harvesting the infected to build super soldiers — murdering every guard, every year, to bury the truth. Levi and Drasa fight their way out, detonate a missile that destroys the pit for good, and Barto dies in the blast. Levi is caught in the explosion but survives.
