La economía socialista del siglo XXI en Cuba | Yoani Sánchez
Cuban activist and journalist Yoani Sánchez described Cuba's current economic landscape, the causes, consequences, and the necessary actions from the private sector to emerge from bankruptcy. The Cuban government is facing its most serious crisis in the last 20 years. This situation has been aggravated by the United States' economic and trade restrictions and the COVID-19 pandemic, which is causing significant losses in the tourism sector—one of the country's most important sources of economic income—as well as shortages of food and medicine. According to Sánchez, as a result of prolonged state control of the Cuban economy, the country lacks liquidity to purchase raw materials, has inefficient production of goods, and maintains practices that divert resources from the public sector. "Every year, the ruling party has to invest more than $2 billion in food purchases." —Yoani Sánchez The Cuban journalist indicated that Cuba has a damaged economy that cannot be reversed because the state is unwilling to implement reforms that could have a political cost. Society demands: *Tax reduction *Right to commercial importance *Creation of a wholesale market *Authorization of medium- and large-sized businesses The activist believes the emergence of social classes, which the Cuban regime has tried to curb for many decades, is inevitable. She also concludes that Cuba's only option is to cede state-owned land to the private sector. "I live in the land of euphemisms; nothing is called as it should be. The ruling party has created a kind of newspeak." —Yoani Sánchez Did you know that the Cuban government has its own language? It uses terms like "available workers" instead of "unemployed" or "self-employed sector" instead of "private sector." Yoani Sánchez Yoani Sánchez is a Cuban philologist and journalist. The newspaper El País awarded her the Ortega y Gasset Prize for journalism in 2008. She was selected by Time magazine as one of the most influential people in the world, and her blog was chosen by the same magazine and CNN in the US as one of the twenty-five best in the world. She is the first blogger to win the María Moors Cabot Prize. Sánchez is known for promoting political and economic change in Cuba, publishing her alternative Cuban blog, and denouncing human rights violations. She is best known for her blog Generación Y (14ymedio.com), which has been translated into seventeen languages and provides a window into daily life in Cuba, presenting a very different picture from that offered by propaganda. Now that she is finally free to travel outside the country—a right denied to her by the Cuban regime for almost a decade—Sánchez is working to raise awareness about the human rights and journalism crisis in Cuba. She has written several books, including Havana Real: One Woman Fights to Tell the Truth About Cuba Today, Cuba Libre, and Vivir y escribir en La Habana. April 28, 2020
