How Jehovah's Witness Leaders Condemned Jonestown—but Imitated It

On May 15, 1979, the Watchtower Society published an article titled, “Is Your Trust in God… or in a Man?” It was presented as a sober warning drawn from the horrors of Jonestown—a tragedy in which more than 900 people died under the manipulation of Jim Jones, a charismatic authoritarian who controlled every aspect of his followers’ lives. The Watchtower framed Jonestown as the ultimate example of what happens when people put faith in men rather than in God. Yet, when you read the article today—decades later and with the full weight of Jehovah’s Witness history in view—it becomes something far more troubling. What was written as a condemnation of blind loyalty becomes, unmistakably, a projection. The Watchtower condemned the very behaviours it was simultaneously cultivating within its own organisation.
