Leoš Janáček - 1.X.1905 - 1st movement / Camila Osses

This is the dramatic and beautiful first movement of "1.X.1905" by Czech composer Leoš Janáček (1851-1928). Another titles given to the piece are "From the Street", and "Sonata" although only the title "1.X.1905" appears in the original manuscript. The genesis of the piece takes places after Leoš Janáček saw a young worker being killed by the German forces at the streets of Brno in 1905 in the context of a demonstration about the creation of a Czech University in Brno. The young man was František Pavlík, who was supporting the demonstration when the German military started to repress people gathered at the front of the Brno Cultural Centre. This incident impacted Janáček profoundly. At the page seven of the manuscript it can be read: "The white marble of the steps of Brno's Besední dum - - - The simple labourer Frant. Pavlík falls there, stained in blood - - - He came merely to campaign for higher education - and was killed by brutal murderers." The first movement is titled "The Presentimient" ("Předtucha). At this occasion, this version is presented without the repetition of the exposition. Its usual lentgh, with the exposition repeated, is approximately 10 minutes. This version is perfomed by Chilean pianist Camila Osses. Recorded at the University of Oregon on May 15th 2021. Camera and sound: Diego Manco Video editing by Sara Vega
