The Office (UK) - Interview with Ricky Gervais on Creating David Brent & Why He Stopped (2004)

Gervais created and starred as David Brent, the cringeworthy, oblivious boss who became a global phenomenon. On why the show resonated: "We used our own voices. It's very parochial but the themes are universal. We got rid of the laugh track and mawkish endings. It was about flawed characters." Gervais explains David Brent's appeal: "He wants to be loved.
