This Tombeau is an elegy for the accidental death of Froberger's dear friend, the lutenist Blancheroche. Froberger wished it played "very slowly and freely, without observing any measure." The composer was not afraid to express deep and subtle, sad emotions in broken, lute-like lines. The low, repeated bass octaves in the bass represent the tolling of the bell. The ending depicts a lowering of Blanceroche into the grave. This is the first recording of this work. Thomas Goff's unique clavichords were some of the finest of the mid-20th century.
