An AMS alternative as a kit? How complicated is it to assemble the BMCU kit from China yourself? If you own a Bambu Lab A1, A1 mini, or PS1, you can opt for the more affordable alternative from the Land of the Rising Sun instead of the expensive original AMS. The BMCU, an AMS alternative, can be ordered as a DIY kit or fully assembled starting at around €50. Note: There are several versions with different features. If you have a basic level of DIY skills and a soldering iron, you can save a significant amount of money. It's hard to find a more affordable way to get a multi-color printing system for your 3D printer. Depending on the printer model, several BMCUs can be combined, allowing you to print significantly more than four colors. The only drawback: Unlike the original Bambu Lab system, the BMCU doesn't have automatic filament detection. Otherwise, it's a fully functional replacement. In addition to multi-color printing, it also allows you to use up all your filament. Like the AMS, the BMCU can switch to your backup spool when the main filament spool runs out and continue printing. My conclusion: I would buy it again in a heartbeat! Whether you choose the kit or the pre-assembled version is entirely up to you. For me, the fun of building it was paramount, and it met all my expectations. The BMCU prints reliably. My only criticisms: an error message remains on the printer, and updating the BMCU's firmware with a Mac is more complicated than with the original AMS. All solvable, but it's a bit of a hassle to begin with. Whether you choose the kit or the pre-assembled version is entirely up to you.
