The game is set in the 1930s, stylistically inspired by the works of Walt Disney and Max Fleischer and their surrealist approach. It was released by Canadian indie developer StudioMDHR on September 29, 2017, for PC and Xbox One. The game is now available for all major platforms. In addition to its distinctive art style, in which all content was hand-drawn, Cuphead has become known for its relatively high level of difficulty, which one might not have initially expected given this setting. In the game, Tassilo & Pottkopp, who have run afoul of the devil while trying to make quick money through gambling, must save their souls by bringing the devil others. All of these are powerful opponents who owe the devil money. The game thus largely consists of boss battles divided into multiple phases, which can be tackled with various firearms, special attacks, and tactical items such as an "evasive smoke bomb" or an additional heart at the cost of attack power. Many battles take place on the ground, but there are also air battles fought with aircraft. The player can fire continuously, but can only withstand three enemy hits. With each hit landed, the special attack bar, which is represented by a maximum of five cards, recharges. Another way to recharge this bar is to parry. All pink attacks and elements in the game can be parried! You can use one card for a powerful attack or all five for a "super" move. Each weapon has different normal and powerful attacks. Ultimates must be unlocked in mausoleums in the overworld. Weapons other than the standard weapon, which is available from the start, can be purchased with a limited number of gold coins in an item shop located in each of the three main worlds. These coins can be found hidden in the overworlds, obtained through side quests, and most notably in the so-called "Run'n'Gun" levels, which represent challenging platforming levels with typical shoot-'em-up gameplay. Cuphead won numerous awards, garnered top ratings (88% on average), and sold over five million copies. The game features a local co-op mode that allows a second player to join the battles. The game is also available on the infotainment touchscreen of Tesla vehicles as part of the Tesla Arcade. The release of "The Delicious Last Course" DLC is scheduled for June 30, 2022.
