In 1251, Trần Hưng Đạo abducted Princess Thiên Thành, and then in 1258, Trần Thánh Tông had a child out of wedlock with Trần Hưng Đạo's sister. It's unknown whether the two families initially intended to retaliate against each other, but from the time she became Empress Thiên Cảm in August and gave birth to her eldest son, Trần Khâm (later Trần Nhân Tông), in November, the relationship between the two families became much more amicable.
