Cracked Episode 03: The Lam Crack from Hell
In this episode of "Cracked," we look at yet another type of damage specific to certain brands of 78, namely Okeh, Columbia, and a few others, known as a lamination crack or lam-crack. These records are less prone to breakage overall, but lam-cracks are often more difficult to repair or stabilize than a normal hairline crack or chip. Today's disc is a copy of Okeh 8547 "Hell is in God's Jail House," recorded 9/30/1927. The lam crack is so bad on this one it goes through both sides of the record, and I've never played it for fear of damaging my phonograph and the disc. I purchased this one several years ago as part of the same lot of damaged but rare 78's that included the Paramount "Wild Women Don't Have the Blues," also on my youtube channel.
