Magic’s creature types had a major rework around the release of Lorwyn, one of the first sets in the game really focused on creature types. Before this point, Wizards played fast and loose with creature types, which caused a lot of issues. The rework, called “The Grand Creature Type Update”, removed a lot of creature types in the game that were completely unnecessary and replaced them with more sensible types.
