We begin by digging up overgrown soil, loosening it, and shaping the bed. Then we use newspaper as mulch and gently lay the seedlings sideways into the soil to protect them from the wind. It took us two hours to prepare this small bed. Though tired, we felt deeply comforted by the touch of the soil and the sound of the breeze, as the scenery of the garden slowly came together. During the process, we unexpectedly found old plastic sheeting buried underground— a weed barrier from over 20 years ago.
