Right in the heart of South America lies a country that has experienced tremendous economic growth. But its population distribution is quite unusual. Only 3% of the population lives in this entire part of the country. So why do almost all Paraguayans live in this small part of the country? Paraguay is located in the center of South America. Paraguay is half the size of Bolivia, with only 6 million inhabitants. It also has no access to the ocean. But it has large rivers and an easy connection system to the Atlantic Ocean. It is thanks to the Río de la Plata Basin that Paraguay's exports can be shipped around the world! Rivers are essential to local trade. And of the 11 Paraguayan cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants, 10 have river connections. The only exception is Pedro Juan Caballero, which borders Brazil. But that's not the strangest thing. If we divide Paraguay's territory in half along the Paraguay River, something curious happens. On the west side, we have 61% of the country's territory, but only 3% of the population lives there. On the east side, where the remaining 39% of the territory is located, 97% of Paraguayans live. It's even simpler if we consider population numbers. 5.8 million Paraguayans live here, while 180,000 live on the other side... To give you an idea, 38% of the country's entire population lives in the urban area of Asunción, the capital.
