Pink, corporate violence, and a world built from a vending machine #gamedev

What if a game didn't have to be fun? That's the question at the center of Gossamer Matrix, a work-in-progress from solo developer Catmilk, a digital artist and former painter who has been building this strange, textural sci-fi world for four years. For this Currently Making, I sit down with Catmilk to talk about the game's visual identity (a deliberately limited color palette, pink as a central organizing force), its narrative premise (corporate militarism, climate-flooded cities, buildings as battlegrounds), and the intentional choice to lean away from traditional ideas of fun. We also get into how working an IT job in a university basement — complete with unsettling vending machines and empty floors full of old desks — has quietly shaped the game's level design. Gossamer Matrix is heading toward its first playtest and a Steam Next Fest demo. Keep an eye on it. 0:00 — Intro 0:45 — From painting to game-making 3:10 — What is Gossamer Matrix? 6:20 — The visual language: pink, limited palettes, Beksinski and Monet 10:15 — Corporate militarism and the office building as a game space 14:40 — Designing intentionally "unfun" experiences 18:00 — Playtesting anxiety and what Catmilk is looking for 22:30 — How the day job shapes the level design 26:00 — Vending machines, empty floors, and the horror of the hallway Search 'Killscreen Currently Making' to find more conversations with experimental game developers or click here: https://www.killscreen.com/catmilk-go...
