Area: 223.28 km2 Population: more than 1,070,000 people. Currency: Armenian Dram Language: Armenian Yerevan was founded in 782 BC, when the king of the ancient state of Urartu (on the territory of the Armenian Highlands) Argishti I founded the city-fortress of Erebuni on these lands. [Today, its remains are located within the city limits of modern Yerevan]. The city had a difficult fate: the indigenous population of the region managed to proclaim their independence only for short periods of time. Yerevan was successively owned by the Arabs, the Seljuk Turks, and the Central Asian conqueror Tamerlane. Famine, devastating wars and the forced deportation of non-Muslim residents did not allow the city to grow and increase its population. Before the October Revolution, Yerevan was a provincial city, significantly inferior in importance and development to neighboring Baku and Tbilisi. Serious changes came here after the establishment of Soviet power and the appointment of the city as the capital of the Armenian SSR. Garni Temple Twenty-eight kilometers from the Armenian capital, in a picturesque place in the Kotayk region, above the valley of the Azat River, rises the only surviving pagan temple in Armenia, Garni. The precise proportions, symmetry, Ionic columns of the building, elegant carving - all this amazes the imagination and cannot leave any tourist indifferent. This extraordinary monument of Armenian history was first mentioned in the first half of the 1st century AD. Historians believe that the construction of the temple began by order of the then king Trdat I. The building was built in honor of the sun god. Symphony of Stone Garni Gorge is a very popular tourist route. The amazingly beautiful natural landmark of this place is called the "Symphony of Stones" or "Basalt Organ". Unusual rocks located at a height of about 50 meters above the ground look like stone pillars of an absolutely correct hexagonal cross-section. The stone “pipes” stretching upwards resemble a huge and majestic church organ. Scientists assume that the “Symphony of Stones” was the result of the collapse of previously formed volcanic rocks. Since the probability of repeated collapses is not excluded even today, tourists are advised to admire the natural wonder from a safe distance. INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE GARNI GORGE The “Symphony of Stones” consists of many regular hexagonal cylinders. They are arranged so regularly and symmetrically that it is difficult to believe that this phenomenon is not man-made, but created by nature itself. Scientists believe that the amazing rocks were formed as a result of the cooling and crystallization of volcanic lava, under conditions of very high pressure. In 2013, a poster depicting the “Symphony of Stones” became the winner in the “Europe” category in the competition of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). Tatev Monastery 30 km from Goris, in the heart of the Syunik region of Armenia, is one of the largest temple complexes in the country - Tatev Monastery or simply Tatev. Chronicles say that in previous centuries the right bank of the Vorotan River was occupied by a pagan temple. With the advent of Christianity, it lost its former significance and in the 9th century AD gave way to a temple with narthexes. The construction of the monastery complex lasted for hundreds of years and was completed only in the 13th century. It has not yet been established exactly who and when gave the monastery its name. According to one version, it was named after the architect who threw himself into the abyss after the completion of construction with the words: "Lights, Surb, ta tev!", which translated from Armenian means: "Holy Spirit, send me wings!" Some scholars believe that the name of the monastery goes back to the name of St. Eustathios, who was killed and buried in the vicinity of the monastery. According to the third version, the temple got its name because within its walls the soul seems to gain wings, freeing itself from the burden of sins and suffering. Song: Lost Sky - Vision pt.
