Uptight (1968) | A Powerful Drama Set After MLK’s Assassination starting Max Julien and Ruby Dee
BLACKTREE MEDIA SATURDAY SHOWCASE: UPTIGHT (1968) This Saturday, BlackTree Media presents Uptight, a powerful political drama directed by Jules Dassin and starring Raymond St. Jacques, Ruby Dee, Frank Silvera, Roscoe Lee Browne, Julian Mayfield, and Max Julien. Set in Cleveland immediately following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the film captures a Black community wrestling with grief, poverty, police oppression, and a growing debate between nonviolence and armed resistance. MOVIE SYNOPSIS After Dr. King’s assassination, unemployed steelworker Tank Williams finds himself increasingly isolated from a revolutionary organization led by his longtime friend Johnny Wells. Desperate for money and consumed by anger, alcoholism, and resentment, Tank betrays Johnny to the police for a reward. When the confrontation ends in tragedy, Tank must face the movement he betrayed and the devastating consequences of his decision. Inspired by Liam O’Flaherty’s novel The Informer, Uptight transforms a story of political betrayal into a tense examination of Black America during one of the most turbulent moments in modern history. KEY CAST • Raymond St. Jacques as B.G. • Ruby Dee as Laurie • Frank Silvera as Kyle • Roscoe Lee Browne as Clarence • Julian Mayfield as Tank Williams • Max Julien as Johnny Wells FILMMAKERS • Director: Jules Dassin • Screenplay: Jules Dassin, Ruby Dee, and Julian Mayfield • Based on: The Informer by Liam O’Flaherty • Music: Booker T. Jones • Genre: Political Drama / Crime Drama • Year: 1968 FILM NOTES Filmed during the political upheaval of 1968, Uptight incorporates footage and imagery connected to Dr. King’s funeral, giving the film an immediacy rarely found in fictional dramas of the period. The participation of Ruby Dee and Julian Mayfield as both writers and performers helped ground the story in the political realities and internal debates taking place within Black communities. The film also features a memorable score composed by Booker T. Jones of Booker T. & the M.G.’s. WHY THIS FILM MATTERS Uptight captures a pivotal moment when many Black Americans were questioning whether nonviolent protest could still deliver meaningful change. Rather than presenting the movement as politically unified, the film examines its competing philosophies, generational tensions, personal sacrifices, and painful betrayals. It is a challenging portrait of people attempting to transform grief and anger into collective action. BlackTree Media is proud to showcase films that preserve Black history, confront difficult political questions, and highlight the work of legendary Black artists.
